There are no more Russian guards at Amrenia’s Agarak checkpoint at its border with Iran. On Monday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that the checkpoint is now under Armenia’s exclusive control, ending a border arrangement with Russia that dated back to the USSR’s disintegration in 1991. The Agarak checkpoint is the only known checkpoint on the Armenian-Iranian border.
Pashinyan met with Vladimir Putin in October and finalized the agreement to withdraw Russian border guards. In July, Russian Federal Security Service border guards officially vacated a checkpoint at Yerevan’s Zvartnots Airport.
