A source told Axios that U.S. President-elected Donald Trump was “reluctant” to let Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky join his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Saturday, but Trump “eventually agreed” after Macron spent several days trying to convince him to hold the joint meeting with Zelensky.
Despite Trump’s rumored hesitation about making it a trilateral sitdown, the meeting ended up being “good and fruitful,” another source told Axios.
A day after the trilateral meeting, Trump wrote on social media that Russia and Ukraine should agree to an immediate ceasefire:
There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin. Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse. I know Vladimir well. This is his time to act.
