An al-Qaeda-affiliated group ambushed and killed Wagner Group mercenaries in central Mali, according to a statement from the group cited by the Associated Press.
The attack, which occurred on November 21, was confirmed by a Malian security official, who told the Associated Press that the mercenaries were targeted at a checkpoint. According to the source, there were fatalities, though he did not specify the number.
The group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), claimed responsibility for the ambush, stating that six mercenaries were killed. Reuters, citing the monitoring organization SITE Intelligence group, reported that at least seven Wagner Group members were killed. A video obtained by Reuters shows the bodies of five men in military uniforms lying near a vehicle, though the agency could not verify the footage’s authenticity.
