Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a decree that permanently revokes state awards previously given to 34 individuals, including former Ukrainian officials and artists, as well as Russian political, religious, and cultural figures.
Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, was among those whose state awards were revoked, losing Ukraine’s Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. The list also included Russian pop singer Philipp Kirkorov, who lost the title “People’s Artist of Ukraine,” and former Ukrainian pro-Kremlin politician Viktor Medvedchuk, who lost the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise and two other awards.
Earlier this week, President Zelensky signed a law allowing the revocation of state awards from people who have committed crimes against Ukraine's national security, peace, humanity, or the international order, as well as those subject to Ukrainian sanctions.
