Russia vetoes U.N. resolution calling for ceasefire in Sudan war

Russia has vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan’s civil war and the delivery of humanitarian aid to millions in desperate need.

The vote, led by the United Kingdom, which drafted the resolution alongside Sierra Leone, saw 14 of 15 Security Council members, including China, in support. However, Russia’s veto blocked its passage.

U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy condemned Russia’s move as “a disgrace,” labeling the country the “enemy of peace.” He also addressed Russia’s U.N. representative directly, asking how many more civilians must suffer and die before Russia takes action. “Russia will have to explain itself to the entire United Nations membership now,” he added.

Sudan’s civil war began in April 2023. As of April 2024, the U.N. estimates that over 8.5 million Sudanese have been displaced, more than 9,000 people have died, and millions are facing starvation.
