Alexey Navalny’s investigative team reported on Friday that Russian state investigators called Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, and gave her an ultimatum: if she didn’t agree within three hours to let them bury him in secret, with no public ceremony, her son would be buried at the penal colony where he died.
Navalnaya reportedly refused to comply with the ultimatum and demanded that the authorities follow Russian law, which requires investigators to release the body of the deceased within two days after the cause of death is established.
According to Navalny’s associates, this two-day period will end on Saturday. Navalny’s mother “is insisting that the authorities conduct his burial and funeral service in the traditional manner,” the team wrote on Telegram.
