Marianna Budanova, the wife of Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov, has been hospitalized and diagnosed with heavy metal poisoning, according to the Ukrainian news site Babel.
The outlet’s sources said that the substances believed to have caused Budanova’s symptoms “are in no way used in daily activities or in military affairs.”
“Their presence may indicate a deliberate attempt to poison a specific person,” they continued.
According to the sources, the Ukrainian authorities are investigating the incident as an attempted murder.
The newspaper Ukrainska Pravda also reported on the attack, writing that its sources said Budanova was “most likely poisoned through her food.” After she complained of feeling unwell, they added, “they did some tests, which revealed that she had been poisoned,” they said.
Ukrainska Pravda’s sources said that “poisoning was confirmed in several employees as well.”
Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have not commented on the incident.
