Journalists from Mediazona and BBC News Russia have worked with a team of volunteers to determine the names of 35,780 Russian soldiers who have been killed in Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
According to the journalists, the highest numbers of casualties occurred among former prisoners (6,691 people since the start of the war) and draftees (4,232 people since the start of the war).
The team also noted that the battle for control of Avdiivka, which some analysts have called the “second Bakhmut,” has not had a significant impact on the casualty count so far. “We’re finding obituaries of people killed in this direction — assault and motorized infantry — and in terms of the number of deaths, Bakhmut is currently far ahead,” Mediazona reported.
Because Mediazona’s list only contains soldiers whose deaths have been publicly confirmed, the actual number of Russian military dead is much higher.
