Ukraine’s Verkhovka Rada has passed the first reading of a bill to ban the activities of all religious organizations that have ties to Russia. The legislation was supported by 267 deputies, with 14 against and two abstaining.

In May 2022, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church declared its full independence from the Moscow Patriarchate. Among other things, the church’s statement cited the position of Russian Orthodox Church leader Patriarch Kirill, who has voiced support for the war against Ukraine.
