Kazakh news site says Russia's federal censor has repeatedly ordered it to delete war-related content

The Kazakh news outlet Vlast announced Tuesday that Russia’s federal censor, Roskomnadzor, has repeatedly contacted its editors with demands to delete content related to the war in Ukraine, threatening to block the site if they refuse. The editors said they have no intention of deleting any articles at Roskomnadzor’s request.

According to Vlast, Russian authorities want to get rid of a story about a Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia that killed more than 20 people and a news brief about the number of civilians who have been killed in Mariupol.

Vlast is just the latest Central Asian outlet to report having received orders from Roskomnadzor. A report published by Mediazona Central Asia in October found that at least four other outlets in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan had been contacted by the Russian agency.
