The Council of the European Union has imposed sanctions against eight people suspected of participating in the poisoning of opposition politician Alexey Navalny in August 2020.

The new sanctions targets include Alexey Alexandrov, Vladimir Panyayev, Ivan Osipov, Konstantin Kudryavtsev, Stanislav Makshakov, and Vladimir Bogdanov, all of whom have been named by The Insider and Bellingcat as members of an FSB task force.

In addition, the sanctions will apply to Kirill Vasilyev, who investigators have named as the director of the FSB Criminalistics Institute, and Artur Zhirov, allegedly the head of the Signal Institute. Both men are believed to have helped develop the substance used to poison Navalny.
