Russia continues shelling civilian infrastructure throughout Ukraine
Russian forces shelled multiple Ukrainian cities on the morning of October 18. Ukrainian authorities declared an air raid alert for the entire country.
According to Dnipropetrovsk Regional Governor Valentyn Reznichenko, Russia carried out two missile strikes on an energy infrastructure target in Dnipro, causing it to catch on fire. The attack caused several of the city’s districts to lose power and took a pumping station out of commission.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that one of the city’s industrial facilities was shelled. “There were two groups of explosions in five minutes,” he wrote on Telegram. Metro service has been suspended in the city.
In Zhytomyr, an energy supply facility was shelled twice, while an unspecified infrastructure target in Kyiv was hit three times, Ukrainian official Kyrylo Tymoshenko reported. Both cities are experiencing power outages.
In Mykolaiv, missile strikes hit a flower market and a two-story residential building, according to Regional Governor Vitalii Kim. At least one person was found dead among the ruins.
Shelling was also reported in Kryvyi Rih.
On October 10, the Russian Ministry of Defense began carrying out massive missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. The ministry announced it was attacking military, energy, and telecommunications targets, but it also shelled civilian targets. The Kremlin made it clear that the strikes were retribution for the explosion on the Crimean Bridge, for which Moscow blames Ukrainian intelligence services.
