Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry has published figures on its military losses during the recent conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh for the first time.
According to the ministry, 2,783 Azerbaijani soldiers were killed during the six weeks of hostilities. More than a hundred more are considered missing and there are 1,245 soldiers being treated in hospitals for injuries.
On November 17, one week after the end of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia’s Defense Ministry reported a military death toll of 2,425 Armenian soldiers.
Dozens of civilian deaths have also been reported since the conflict began, but neither side has issued exact numbers on civilian casualties.
Renewed fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic broke out on September 27. On the night of November 10, the two sides signed a ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia. As a result of the agreement, control of nearly half of Nagorno-Karabakh’s territory was handed over to Azerbaijan.
