The European Union plans to impose sanctions against representatives of the Belarusian government responsible for the “shocking and unacceptable” violence used to disperse protests, as well as for the falsification of the elections, says European Council President Charles Michel.
Further details on the sanctions have yet to be announced.
On August 19, the EU held an extraordinary summit to discuss the crisis in Belarus. Following the meeting, European leaders expressed solidarity with the protesters and announced that they refused to recognize the results of the August 9th presidential elections.
