Local policeman in Arkhangelsk gets suspended sentence for ignoring domestic violence complaints from woman who was murdered

A former police officer in the Russian city of Arkhangelsk has received a three-year suspended sentence after he ignored complaints from a local woman who said the man she was living with was beating and threatening her.

The 34-year-old woman contacted police several times in 2016 and 2017 before the man killed her in July 2017. The murderer hit her 115 times with “his hands, his feet, and auxiliary tools.” He was sentenced to 18 years in a high-security prison colony.

Investigators found that if the police officer had responded to the woman’s complaints, her murder would have been prevented. The officer denied the charges against him. His sentence comes amid active discussions of domestic violence in Russia and a bill to recriminalize first-time offenses in that category.
