On Wednesday, the Federal Security Service announced the arrest of a soldier serving in Russia’s Southern Military District on suspicion of treason. The individual, whose name hasn’t yet been released to the public, allegedly collected classified military information for Ukrainian intelligence.
According to the FSB’s Public Relations Center, which apparently released a photograph of the soldier being arrested, the data in question “could harm Russia’s national security.”
Update: While Russian officials have not identified the suspect, journalists at Open Media and open-source-intelligence researchers at the Conflict Intelligence Team say the arrest photograph indicates that the man is Ruslan Artykov, a 28-year-old senior lieutenant in Russia's Signal Corps. Artykov's last recorded social-media activity was at 1 p.m. on the day the FSB announced the soldier's arrest.
The human rights organization “Komanda 29” (Team 29) says roughly 100 people were convicted of either treason or espionage in Russia between 1997 and 2017. Most treason cases in Russia are classified, their details are never disclosed publicly, and trials are held behind closed doors.
