After covering protests for fair elections, independent Russian TV channel faces tax audit
Russian tax officials have requested documents from the independent television station Dozhd in order to audit the channel’s income, expenses, and tax payments between 2016 and 2018. The channel’s CEO, Natalia Sindeeva, posted about the inspection on Facebook.
Sindeeva did not offer any potential explanations for the audit. However, Dozhd has recently made headlines for livestreaming protests in which thousands of Moscow residents have demanded that opposition candidates be allowed to run for the city’s legislature. The channel also took down the paywall for its live broadcasts as the protests escalated. During the course of a protest livestream on July 27, police arrived at the channel’s office to call its editor-in-chief in for questioning.
Update: In an interview with the legal news outlet Mediazona, Sindeeva said she could not rule out a connection between her channel’s protest coverage and the newly announced inspection.
