Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu spoke publicly about the surviving members of the submarine crew whose vessel caught fire on July 1, killing 14.

Shoigu indicated that a “civilian industry representative” was present onboard the vessel that caught fire and that he was the first to be evacuated. The defense minister also said that sailors “closed a manhole behind him to prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the deep-sea vessel before fighting to the end for the survival of the ship.”

Shoigu did not specify how many people were located on board the vessel. He said those killed would receive state honors and their families would receive support from the Ministry of Defense.
