A Russian appeals court has ruled that only Vkontakte has the right to mine user data on its website. Russia’s largest social network sued the company “Double Data” last year after the software developer started collecting and analyzing public user data for commercial use by enterprises like banks.

Vkontakte lost its first lawsuit but won on appeal, after convincing an appeals judge that Double Data violates Vkontakte’s user agreement and pulls information from a special automated database.

The social network is celebrating the verdict as a victory for Internet users, but some experts warn that the ruling could put the breaks on the development of Russia’s big data industry.
