Navalny’s presidential campaign exhausts its domestic legal options, paving the way for his ECHR appeal
The Presidium of Russia’s Supreme Court has rejected Alexey Navalny’s lawsuit challenging the Central Election Commission’s refusal to register his presidential candidacy application, meaning that the opposition politician has now exhausted his domestic legal options, paving the way for his appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.
Russian federal election officials told Navalny that he cannot run for elected office because of a felony probation sentence. Navalny says his conviction was fraudulent and insists that the Russian Constitution guarantees his right to seek the presidency.
This Sunday, on January 28, Navalny is organizing nationwide protests to promote a voters’ boycott against Russia’s presidential election on March 18.
