For the first time in 22 years, the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta has a new chief editor: Sergey Kozheurov, one of its founders who’s served as general director since 2000. Novaya Gazeta’s newsroom elected Kozheurov on Friday, November 17, choosing him over Kirill Martynov, the head of the paper’s politics and economics department, and senior editor Alexey Palukhin.
On November 13, long-time chief editor Dmitry Muratov announced that he would be stepping down from his post and taking on a new role at Novaya Gazeta as chairman of the board of directors and editorial board. He denies that this change is the result of any pressure from the government.
