Russian wedding magazine provokes criminal accusations for photos staged at a dilapidated church
State investigators in Tatarstan have begun a preliminary review of a wedding magazine that shared photographs taken outside a village church in the Yelabuzhsky District, featuring a model wearing a translucent dress. The magazine is accused of offending the public’s religious feelings.
Based on the photos, the Ilinsky Church in the village of Gari is currently in a dilapidated state. According to the website Business Online, the building looks abandoned, but it still occasionally hosts prayer services. A local deacon confirmed to the website that the church is still active, despite its “deplorable state” and lack of remodeling funds.
The wedding magazine published the controversial photos on its Vkontakte page. A day later, it deleted the images and apologized to anyone who felt offended, explaining that the photographers thought the church was totally abandoned.
The deacon who spoke to Business Online warned that local parishioners might file a lawsuit against the magazine, if it decides to publish the church photographs in its print edition.
