Russia fines an American professor for conducting academic research while in Tuva on a tourist visa

The Russian Interior Ministry says a US Naval Academy professor entered the country illegally. According to officials, the professor (a US citizen) claimed upon entering the country that she was traveling for tourism, but she was later discovered to have conducted research for an academic paper in the city of Kyzyl in the Tuva Republic.

As a result, she was fined 2,000 rubles (roughly $30), and has since left the country.
