‘Nightmare’ continues for Shikotan fish processing plant workers who appealed to Putin on live TV
Workers at the “Island” fish processing plant on Shikotan island in Russia’s Far East have sent a second appeal—this time in written form—to President Vladimir Putin. The workers are requesting Putin’s help to stop the Sakhalin district attorney from continuing its investigations into the plant. Seventy plant employees have signed the letter.
“They continue to make our lives a nightmare. Huge court cases are being initiated against the plant’s management. Today, we learned the company has been declared bankrupt and we are being threatened with dismissal. There is nowhere else for us to find work; this is the only [place] where our labor is in demand,” the written appeal says.
On April 14, 2016, Vladimir Putin held his annual televised “Q&A” phone-in. Workers from the fish-processing plant appealed to the president about their frequently unpaid wages. The workers said they work “like slaves” on Shikotan Island.
Putin responded to their appeal by saying he hope Russia’s Attorney General would investigate why the local district attorney had not yet addressed these issues.
