Krasnodar police release Alexey Navalny, his family, and coworkers after allegedly checking for links to ISIL

Earlier today, police in the Krasnodar region detained and then promptly released opposition activist Alexey Navalny, his family, and some of his coworkers from the Anti-Corruption Foundation.

Officers pulled over a bus carrying the group during what Navalny calls a special “Anaconda” operation. On Twitter, he said police detained his group on suspicion of having links to the terrorist organization ISIL.

The Interior Ministry's representative for the Krasnodar region, Maria Pirogova, says nothing of the sort took place. The police merely stopped the bus for a routine check and inspection, she said.

Russian traffic police do, in fact, commonly carry out “Anaconda” special operations. This is the codename for routine inspections to catch contraband being smuggled across regional borders, as well as criminal gangs and illegal migrants.
