Russian police will be able to remotely control cars produced in 2017
Russian police will soon have the ability to remotely deactivate the engines of runaway cars they pursue.
This will be possible after the introduction of Emergency Response Systems (ERAs) in 2017, which will be fitted to all new car engines produced within the Eurasian Customs Union (that is Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia).
Police will engage a car’s ERA by sending a signal to the device either via Russia’s homegrown Global Navigation Satellite System (otherwise known by the acronym GLONASS) or via a cellular signal.
