Disney to team up with Russian group to film a tale of heroes and fantasy
The Walt Disney Company has signed an agreement with Russian studio Yellow, Black and White group for joint work on a fantasy film, “The Last Bogatyr.” A “bogatyr” is a hero or dashing knight in Russian folk legends, and often portrayed as a defender of Russia from its enemies.
The film follows a winner of a TV show on paranormal activity, Ivan, who somehow enters the world of Russian fairy tales. In this fantastic world, Ivan is believed to be a descendant of Ilya Muromets—a folk hero and bogatyr dating back to Kievan Rus.
The film’s budget has not yet been specified. Filming will begin in May 2016. The release date is set for October 19, 2017. Disney is currently in negotiations to also release the film in IMAX format. They also plan to apply for Russian state funding support.
Disney made a low-budget film in Russia in 2009, “The Book of Masters,” which made decent returns.
