Deputy Chairman for the Sakhalin regional government, Igor Bystrov, who oversees the fishing industry in the region, says a government order was issued this morning for all wages owed to the fish-processing plant workers on Shikotan Island to be paid in full. The order was issued by Governor Oleg Kozhemyako himself, says Bystrov.

On Thursday, April 14, Vladimir Putin held his annual Direct Line Q&A phone-in on live TV. Workers from the fish-processing plant appealed to the Russian President about their frequently unpaid wages. The workers said they labored “like slaves” on Shikotan Island.
