The Russian Foreign Ministry has refused to issue the German Brigadier General Gert Gawellek a Russian visa. Gawellek was to serve as Defense Attaché at the German embassy in Moscow. The Foreign Ministry has not given an explanation for the visa denial.

The German magazine Der Spiegel notes that Germany, in turn, had refused entry to a Russian citizen who was due to take up his post as Russian Defense Attaché in Germany.

According to Der Spiegel, the German side found elements of the future Russian Defense Attaché’s professional history to be “unacceptable.” Official sources did not disclose which circumstances were unacceptable, but Der Spiegel notes that “some Defense Attachés at the Russian embassy had worked for one of the countless Russian intelligence agencies in the past.”

The incident has been regarded as a ‘retaliatory measure’ in German diplomatic circles.
