Russian tourism official wants to make it easier for foreigners to get a visa
Oleg Safonov, the head of Rosturism, Russia’s federal tourism agency, has proposed simplifying the visa regime for foreign tourists coming to Russia.
In order to attract international tourists, Safonov says it’s be necessary to develop “new technologies for issuing visas.” This may include electronic visas and handing out visas at the border, as soon as tourist arrive in Russia.
The head of Rosturism believes that the current system of issuing Russian visas prevents the development of incoming tourism.
In early July, Rosturism announced that the number of foreign tourists coming to Russia grew in 2015 by 16.5 percent. Chinese tourists account for most of that growth.
In 2014, the World Economic Forum ranked Russia 45th in the world for attractiveness for tourists. This was 18 places higher than Russia’s ranking the previous year. The the ruble’s devaluation was reportedly a factor in this improvement. At the same time, the World Economic Forum noted that Russia has very stringent visa requirements for foreigners, and ranked Russia at 120th place in this category.
