Russian officials inspect Torah for extremism
The local Attorney Office in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg has confiscated a series of Tanakh books, including the Torah, from a Jewish secondary school in order to inspect them for extremist content. An activist in the Jewish community in the city of Yekaterinburg told the news source Kursor that the books were confiscated in late May and that the results of the investigation have not yet been reported.
About one year ago, the secondary school of the Yekaterinburg Jewish community center ‘Ohr Avner’ was threatened with closure.
The Jewish secondary school Ohr Avner was subjected to inspections before. In 2014, an inspection led by the local Attorney Office yielded dozens of violations, including failure to meet nation-wide educational standards.
Earlier, a Yekaterinburg court ruled that the school owes the city several years worth of rent. The school maintains that they have the right to use the property for free because they had undertaken renovations of the building.
