Russia’s Federal Security Bureau (FSB) announced today that it has arrested a Lithuanian citizen suspected of espionage. An FSB spokesman said the individual was detained on May 19 in Moscow, caught in the act of receiving classified information from a Russian citizen.

“After being presented with the evidence against him, the suspect confessed to being an officer in the second department of the operational service (military intelligence) in the national defense ministry of the Lithuanian Republic,” the FSB said.

Russian officials are withholding the name of the alleged Lithuanian spy, and refusing to say any more about the Russian citizen who reportedly aided him.

On May 4, police in Lithuania arrested a member of the FSB, accusing the agent of trying to infiltrate the country’s policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and intelligence services. Lithuanian officials say Russia was trying to obtain classified information “with the aim of manipulating and influencing decision-making processes at the highest level.”
