According to the lawyer of one of the suspects in the murder of Russian politician Boris Nemtsov, a new lead investigator has taken charge of the case.

The previous head investigator, Major General Igor Krasnov, is a decorated police officer who solved the murders of lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova. Krasnov also played a key role in the investigation of the attempted assassination of politician and businessman Anatoly Chubais.

The lawyer of one of the suspects in Nemtsov’s murder complained about the change to the news agency RIA Novosti, saying, “Officially they’re not telling us anything, but if it’s true that Igor Krasnov is no longer leading the investigative team, that is bad.”

According to the lawyer, the new lead investigator is a police officer named Nikolai Tutevich. RIA Novosti‘s source in the police force says Krasnov has been promoted.

Boris Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister and prominent critic of Vladimir Putin, was shot to his death on February 27 in the center of Moscow, not far from the Kremlin. Nemtsov was 55-years-old.

Police have arrested five individuals for Nemtsov’s murder—all men from the Russian North Caucasus. Zaur Dadayev is the primary suspect. He initially confessed, but later recanted, claiming he’d been tortured into claiming responsibility.
