Russia’s twerking teens are victims of negligence and perpetrators of obscenity, police say

In their preliminary investigation into a dance school in Orenburg, police have discovered evidence of obscene behavior and criminal negligence. The case was launched yesterday, after a YouTube video of a performance at the school went viral. The video featured more than a dozen young girls dressed scantily as bees, dancing a heavily sexualized routine that included almost two full minutes of twerking.

According to the news agency Interfax, the local Orenburg branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee started an inspection of the dance school almost immediately after the revelations on YouTube.

Signs of criminal negligence have reportedly been discovered in the actions of the dance studio’s management, the administration at the local recreation center (where the dance took place), and local state officials.

A representative of the Investigative Committee told reporters that the twerk dance itself is being viewed as an illegal lewd act.

The already infamous “twerking bee” dance was performed by girls studying at the Credo dance studio in Orenburg.

The YouTube video of the performance (see above) has attracted more than 3.5 million views in less than three days.

Russia's Children's Rights Commissioner, Pavel Astakhov, wrote on Twitter, “The creator of this ‘[dance] number’ is almost certainly Piglet.” Astakhov says it’s hard to assess the dance from a legal standpoint, but he stresses that it’s necessary to condemn it on moral grounds as “vulgar and offensive.”
