A Russian submarine docked and undergoing repairs near Arkhangelsk is rumored to be on fire, according to a report by the news agency TASS. The agency’s sources in the military have yet to name the vessel.

According to RIA Novosti, the fire broke out on a nuclear submarine now in drydock. The news website FlashNord claims the incident took place on the nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine Orel (“Eagle”) project 949A Antei (“Antaeus”).

The submarine’s rubber insulation is allegedly what caught fire. While at sea, the Antaeus is equipped with P-700 Granit antiship cruise missiles. When docked for repairs, however, all ordnance is removed from naval vessels.

No one was reportedly injured in the blaze.

Update: After three hours, FlashNord says fire was extinguished without any major damage to the submarine itself.

A similar fire occurred in December 2011 in Murmansk, when the K-84 Ekaterinburg nuclear submarine burned while in drydock. It took almost three years to repair the ship, originally launched in 1984, and return it to service in Russia’s Navy.
