Fundraiser for new Russian media project to ‘fight hatred’

Russian journalist and media manager Vladimir Yakovlev, the founder of the newspaper Kommersant, has started raising funds for a new independent media project in Russia.

The description of the new project states that “now, more than ever, we need a new independent media to unite the best journalists by a common goal: to stop propaganda of hatred; to find a way to resist the madness that is tearing apart an entire country.” Yakovlev claims his goal is to create a new media project that will “turn zombies back into people.”

Vladimir Yakovlev founded the daily newspaper Kommersant in 1989, during a period of reform in the Soviet Union which paved the way for greater openness and more freedom of speech. It later became one of Russia's widest-read newspapers.

In 2008, Yakovlev, together with Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, established Snob, a print and online magazine offering a mix of reporting and fiction, “for people who live in various countries around the world, but think in Russian.” Yakovlev was replaced as Snob's chief editor in 2011.
