Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Russia’s Chechen Republic, took part in a local sporting competition last weekend, where he succeeded in hurling a leg of lamb roughly 10 meters (32 feet). The event, the “Benoi Spring,” took place in a village called Benoi. Participants competed in 14 different sports, which included throwing stones, knives, other contestants, and legs of lamb.

According to the TV channel Zvezda, the leg of lamb wasn’t real, and athletes were instead throwing a dummy that weighed eight kilograms (about 18 pounds). Kadyrov recorded one of the best scores in the leg-toss.
On social media, Kadyrov described some of the festival’s other competitions: tug of war, weightlifting, and wrestling.
However, Ramzan Kadyrov declined to participate in the horserace, citing his health. “I’ll try to take part next year, but my weight is too high now. The horses are local, so they can’t support my [current] weight,” Kadyrov said.
