Meduza is hiring a social media editor for its English-language edition

Source: Meduza

Meduza is looking for a social media editor to maintain and develop our English-language social media presence and coverage of breaking news. The social media editor will be required to develop content and promotion strategies and ensure consistency in our digital tone and image. Candidates must have native-level fluency in English and extremely strong Russian-language skills.

Meduza publishes news and feature stories from hundreds of sources in Russia and across Eastern Europe and Eurasia. We value our independence and strive to be a reliable, trusted outlet for objective, verified, and unbiased information and sharp insights about the region. Meduza’s team includes some of Russia’s top professionals in news and reporting.

We seek candidates with strong regional knowledge — applicants who can distinguish RIA Novosti and Mediazona and navigate the various sensitivities that animate the online discussions involving Russia and its neighbors. Applicants should have at least two years of experience in the Russian media landscape.

What you’ll do as social media editor

  • Meet with Meduza in English’s core team to brainstorm and define promotion strategies and campaigns
  • Develop and maintain a consistent tone, image, and style for Meduza’s social media
  • Review, proofread, and edit completed work before posting
  • Determine, schedule, and manage the optimal times to post content
  • Review and interpret analytics and implement strategies that grow Meduza in English’s audience and expand our value as a source of news coverage
  • Stay abreast of industry and audience trends, advancements in technology, and new social media platforms and tools
  • Additionally: write short briefs about breaking news (adding to the updates available in Meduza’s weekly News Feed)

What you’ll bring to the job

  • As stated above, native-level fluency in English and extremely strong Russian-language skills, plus at least two years of experience in the Russian media landscape
  • Area expertise (a thorough knowledge of the politics, culture, and current events of Russia, Ukraine, and the surrounding region)
  • A lively writing style that doesn’t bore people to tears when they read about this stuff
  • The ability to work remotely through a digital workspace

How to apply

Submit a résumé and a cover letter explaining why you’d like to be our social media editor and draft five tweets promoting five stories that Meduza recently published, plus one short tweet thread promoting a sixth Meduza story. Also in your cover letter, please propose one improvement to our Instagram page.
