Heavy rains are drenching Sochi today, flooding the city and causing mayhem for locals and travelers alike. Rainfall normal for six weeks at this time of year has fallen in Sochi in the past day. Local officials have already declared an emergency situation in two regions hit particularly bad by flooding.
Local officials are advising people in Sochi to remain in their homes, if possible, and to avoid in any event going near the coast, where tornadoes could form at sea and make their way to land, according to meteorologists.
The Sochi airport has also been closed, where both the airfield and the terminal itself is suffering from serious flooding. Roughly 2,000 passengers are thought to stranded, due to delayed and canceled flights.
Sochi’s main train station, also currently flooded, has also suspended operations.
Meduza has collected several astounding photos and videos posted to Instagram from the disaster area.
