In mid-April, massive forest fires began in Russia’s Zabaykalsky region, an area in eastern Siberia bordering China and Mongolia. By April 15, the flames had spread across 56 thousand hectares (138 thousand acres). Three people have died and hundreds of homes have been destroyed. High winds are carrying the fires into the villages, and the administrative center of the region, Chita, is engulfed by smoke. Just like in Khakassia, another part of Siberia where 23 people lost their lives in fires earlier this month, the Zabaykalsky region disaster was caused by people burning dry grass. Meduza has collected photos and videos from the region.
