As Yekaterinburg moves to abolish direct mayoral elections, Russia is poised to lose its own independent mayor

The governor of the Sverdlovsk region has introduced legislation that would abolish Yekaterinburg’s direct mayoral elections, targeting one of his chief political rivals, incumbent Mayor Evgeny Roizman. Yekaterinburg currently has an elected mayor and an appointed “city manager.” Roizman has condemned the move, saying that elected officials answer to their constituents, while political appointees are accountable only to the people who hired them.

Roizman, who was elected in 2013, has complained to reporters that the powers of the city’s mayoral office are already severely limited.
