The ‘Open Russia’ movement is being kicked out of another office

The “Open Russia” movement, founded by exiled former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, is being forced out of its offices by another bullied landlord, says the group’s head, Alexander Solovyov. The organization has until Friday to vacate its current Moscow office.

Solovyov says the owners delivered the eviction notice shortly after a visit from law enforcement officials. This is the second office Open Russia has been forced from in the last year.

The persecution of Open Russia

In April 2017, the Russian Attorney General’s Office banned the British entity “Open Russia Civic Movement” as an “undesirable organization.” Representatives of the Open Russia movement in Russia claim they have no connection to the banned British organization, saying they receive no foreign funds.

The Attorney General’s Office has promised that its decision wouldn’t affect the work of the Russian movement, but Russian censors have nonetheless blocked Open Russia’s website and the MBKh-Media website, and the group’s activists have been fined several times for participating in the activities of an “undesirable organization.”
